Council on America's Military Past
43rd Annual Military History Conference
San Francisco, CA
May 2010
Ken Zadwick, CAMP Second Vice President and President of the Golden West Department and our host for the 2010 Military History Conference, has announced more plans for the conference.
The conference will start on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, with the annual afternoon meeting of the Board of Directors. Following the new conference format, papers will be delivered at the historic Mare Island Historic Park Museum, where a joint luncheon with the Society for Military History and the CAMP business meeting will be held. Short presentations will also be made at lunch on travel days and at the closing banquet.
The opening ceremony on Friday will be held at the Mare Island Cemetery, the resting place for sailors from many nations. Trips will follow to the California Military Museum in Sacramento, Sutter's Fort, Benicia Arsenal, and Travis Air Force Base.
A visit will also be made to the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historic Park, honoring and learning about the women and men who built the Arsenal of Democracy. Here we can visit the USS Read Oak Victory ship, the last remaining Victory Ship made in the Richmond Kaiser Shipyard.
We will hold our traditional closing banquet on Saturday at the Mare Island Shipyard Commander's Quarters on Officer's Row.
The optional Sunday tour will concentrate on the San Francisco area with visits to the Marin County Nike site and museum, fort Point, and other coast defense sites such as Fort Baker, Fort Berry, fort Cronkhite, Fort Winfield Scott, Fort Mason, and Angel Island.
