(DOD Photograph)FOR THE ACTIVE DUTY, PRIOR SERVICE AND RETIRED MEMBERS OF OUR ARMED FORCES

We want to thank the soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who have contributed so much to our rich military heritage.  They carved their names in our history books by their deeds and paid for our freedom foot by foot as they engaged our country's enemies both at home and in far-off lands.  They know that the price of freedom is not measured by the words of politicians but in the the sweat of men struggling across a battlefield under heavy enemy fire, in the blood of wounded and dying soldiers, and in the tears of widows and orphans of fallen comrades.

Even the most meager military camp, post and battle site is a memorial to the men and women who struggled to raise out country from a backward wilderness to a world power.  Today many stand in harms way, engaged in a war against terrorism to protect us from future threats and foreign aggression.  Historians will be writing about their contributions to our military heritage, and the Council on America's Military Past will continue to encourage the preservation, interpretation and publication of military history including their success and sacrifice.

Thank you for your service to our county.  May God protect you and grant you speedy success in your mission and may he reward you with a safe journey home.

We also want salute the families of our serviceman, especially the wives, who have a history of unselfish dedication to home and family.  Since our earliest history, military wives have had to endure many nights alone while living with the constant fear of learning that their spouse has been wounded or killed.  While the soldiers fight our country's enemies their wives shoulder the responsibility for keeping the family together through trying and sometimes grief-stricken times and constantly struggle with the financial hardships of family separation.

Thank you for your sacrifice and devotion that make it possible for our military men and women to achieve great victories and overcome impossible odds.
